Every piping system that handles a fluid eventually needs a valve to isolate, throttle, divert, or prevent backflow. When that fluid is corrosive, high-pressure, or temperature-extreme, the valve body material becomes as critical as the valve design itself. Stainless steel valves manufactured in Grade 304, 316, and 316L are the workhorse of the chemical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, and water treatment industries precisely because they combine corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and pressure-temperature capability that carbon steel cannot match. At Kalpataru Piping Solution, we supply the complete family of stainless steel valves ss ball valves, stainless steel gate valves, globe valves, needle valves, check valves, manifold valves, and butterfly valves in grades SS 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 316Ti, 317L, 321, 347H, and 904L, manufactured to API 600, ASME B16.34, and MSS SP-80 standards. Tell us your grade, type, size, pressure class, and end connection we respond with a confirmed quote within 24 hours.

What are Stainless Steel Valves?
A stainless steel valve is a pressure-rated flow-control device whose body, bonnet, and trim are manufactured from austenitic or other stainless steel alloys — typically SS 304, 316, 316L, or their variants. Unlike carbon steel valves that corrode in wet, acidic, or chloride-bearing process streams, stainless steel valves maintain their mechanical integrity and sealing surface quality across a wide range of temperatures and chemical environments, making them the default choice for process industries.

Benefits of Stainless Steel Valve vs Carbon Steel Valves
| Property | Stainless Steel Valve | Carbon Steel Valve |
| Corrosion Resistance | Excellent (no coating needed) | Poor (requires painting, galvanising) |
| Hygienic Service | Suitable (food/pharma grade) | Not suitable |
| Cryogenic Service | Yes (down to –196°C) | Limited (impact toughness issue) |
| Chloride Environments | Good (316L) to Excellent (904L) | Very poor |
| Maintenance Frequency | Low | High (corrosion, painting) |
| Life Expectancy | 20–40 years in service | 5–15 years in corrosive service |
| Initial Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Total Cost of Ownership | Often lower (less maintenance) | Often higher |
Benefits of Low-Carbon Grades (304L, 316L)
- Low carbon content eliminates carbide precipitation during welding — the sensitisation that can occur in the heat-affected zone of standard 304 and 316 valves when welded in place does not occur in L-grades, meaning weld-end valves maintain corrosion resistance at the join.
- Can be used in severe corrosive environments that require both welded installation and ongoing exposure to corrosive media — 316L is the standard specification for welded valve installation in offshore and chemical plant.
- Weld annealing only required in high-stress applications — for most process installations, 304L and 316L valves can be welded without post-weld heat treatment (PWHT).
Stainless Steel Valve Pressure-Temperature Rating (ASME B16.34 — SS 316L)
| Pressure Class | Max Working Pressure at 38°C | Max Working Pressure at 260°C | Max Working Pressure at 538°C |
| Class 150# | 19.6 bar (285 psi) | 17.0 bar | 13.8 bar |
| Class 300# | 51.1 bar (740 psi) | 44.8 bar | 36.6 bar |
| Class 600# | 102.1 bar (1480 psi) | 89.6 bar | 73.3 bar |
| Class 900# | 153.2 bar (2220 psi) | 134.4 bar | 110.0 bar |
| Class 1500# | 255.3 bar (3705 psi) | 224.0 bar | 183.3 bar |
| Class 2500# | 425.5 bar (6170 psi) | 373.3 bar | 305.4 bar |
Actual P-T ratings depend on grade, temperature, and body material. Always verify against ASME B16.34 tables for the specific grade.

Application Note: Choosing Between SS 304 and SS 316 Valves
The decision between SS 304 and SS 316 valves comes down to chloride exposure:- SS 304 (CF8) valves — correct for fresh water, food service, mild chemicals, indoor air, steam, and general process service where chloride concentration is below ~200 ppm and temperature below 60°C.
- SS 316 / 316L (CF8M) valves — required for seawater, marine atmospheres, swimming pools, bleach, salt solutions, and any process where chloride concentration exceeds 200 ppm or temperature is elevated. The 2–3% molybdenum content in SS 316 provides pitting corrosion resistance that SS 304 cannot replicate.
- SS 904L valves — specified for sulphuric acid (all concentrations), phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, and other highly aggressive media where even SS 316L is insufficient. The high molybdenum (4–5%) and nickel (23–28%) content of 904L provides resistance that sets it far above standard austenitic grades.

Stainless Steel Gate Valves
The stainless steel gate valve provides full-bore, bidirectional isolation with minimal pressure drop. Gate valves are specified where occasional isolation is needed and throttling is not — closing flow with a wedge gate seated against two parallel seats.
- Forged SS gate valve — ASTM A182 F304/F316; socket weld or threaded ends; ½” to 4″; high-pressure classes up to 2500#
- Cast SS gate valve — ASTM A351 CF8/CF8M; flanged ends; 2″ to 48″; Class 150# to 600#
- Knife edge gate valve — for slurry, pulp, and viscous fluids; SS 304/316 body
- Rising stem / non-rising stem — both configurations available
Forged Gate Valves | Cast Steel Gate Valves | Knife Edge Gate Valve
Stainless Steel Globe Valves
The stainless steel globe valve regulates and throttles flow using a plug (disc) moving perpendicular to the flow axis against a circular seat. It offers precise throttling that ball and gate valves cannot match.
- Forged SS globe valve — F304/F316; high-pressure small-bore (up to 2500#)
- Cast SS globe valve — CF8/CF8M; flanged large-bore (150# to 900#)
- Angle-type globe valve — 90° body where space constraints prevent straight-through installation; useful for pump discharge and compressor outlets

Frequently Asked Questions – Stainless Steel Manifold Valves
A stainless steel valve is a pressure-rated flow-control device with a body made from austenitic stainless steel (SS 304, 316, 316L, or similar grades). It is used to isolate, regulate, or divert flow in piping systems handling corrosive fluids, high-purity media, seawater, food-grade liquids, pharmaceuticals, and high-temperature or cryogenic services where carbon steel would corrode or contaminate the product.
SS 316L (CF3M) is the minimum recommendation for seawater service. Its molybdenum content resists the pitting and crevice corrosion that seawater causes in SS 304. For hot concentrated brine or long-term submersion, SS 904L or super duplex grades offer even higher resistance.
Stainless steel valve pressure ratings follow ASME B16.34 classes: 150#, 300#, 600#, 800#, 900#, 1500#, and 2500#. Instrumentation needle valves and manifold valves are rated up to 6000 PSIG. The actual working pressure at temperature decreases as temperature rises — always verify against the ASME B16.34 P-T rating table for the specific grade.
Yes. Stainless steel valves are widely used for gas service — natural gas, instrument air, nitrogen, hydrogen, and specialty gases. For clean gas service, SS 304 ball valves are standard. For corrosive gases (chlorine, HCl, sour gas with H₂S), SS 316L or higher alloy grades are specified. All valves for gas service are tested to API 598 seat and shell leakage requirements before dispatch.
A stainless steel non-return check valve (also called a non-return valve or NRV) allows flow in one direction only and prevents backflow automatically without operator action. It is installed in pump discharge lines, compressor outlets, and any system where reverse flow would damage equipment. Types include swing check, wafer check, piston (spring-loaded) check, and foot valves.
Stainless steel valve price depends on type (ball, gate, globe, needle), grade (SS 304, 316, 316L, 904L), size (NB), pressure class, end connection, and order quantity. SS 316L valves cost more than SS 304 due to molybdenum content. Contact Kalpataru Piping Solution with your complete valve list — we provide grade, size, and quantity-specific pricing within 24 hours.
