What is 316 stainless steel shim?
SS 316 is what you reach for once SS 304 stops being enough. The molybdenum addition — typically 2-3% — gives it markedly better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments: marine air, de-icing salts, chemical processing, and anywhere sustained exposure to saline or acidic conditions would eat through standard austenitic grades. SS 316L is the low-carbon version, specified wherever heavy welding is involved, for the same reason 304L exists — it resists carbide precipitation at the weld heat-affected zone. FAQs - Stainless Steel 316/316L Shims
The difference is carbon content, same as with 304 and 304L. SS 316 allows up to 0.08% carbon, while SS 316L is capped around 0.035%. That lower carbon in 316L resists carbide precipitation at weld zones, making it the safer choice for heavily welded fabrications, while standard 316 offers marginally higher strength.
SS 316 contains 2-3% molybdenum, which SS 304 lacks. That molybdenum gives 316 significantly better resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments — marine air, de-icing salts, and chemical processing — where 304 would corrode much faster.
