What Is a Stainless Steel Needle Valve?
A stainless steel needle valve is a precision flow-control device that uses a long, tapered needle-shaped plunger moving axially through a small orifice to regulate fluid or gas flow with exceptional accuracy. Unlike ball or gate valves, which are designed primarily for on/off isolation, an SS needle valve excels at throttling – allowing operators to make fine, incremental adjustments to flow rate even at high pressures.
The operating principle is straightforward: rotating the handwheel or handle drives the needle stem into or out of the seat. As the needle advances into the seat, the annular flow area decreases, restricting flow. At full closure, the tapered tip seats tightly against the valve seat, providing a bubble-tight, zero-leakage shutoff. This design makes the needle valve stainless steel construction ideal for hydraulic, pneumatic, and instrumentation applications where precise metering is essential.
Key Design Features
- Tapered needle stem: Provides leak-tight shutoff and smooth, repeatable throttling
- Forged body: Manufactured from ASTM A182 F304, F316, or F316L forged bar for maximum strength
- Fine-thread spindle: Enables precise incremental flow adjustment – critical in instrument isolation and sampling circuits
- Rising stem: Gives visual indication of valve position (open or closed)
- Packing gland: PTFE or graphite packing ensures zero fugitive emissions
- Multiple end connections: NPT, BSPT, socket weld, butt weld, or tube end (Swagelok-compatible)
- High pressure rating: Available in 800 PSI, 3,000 PSI, 6,000 PSI, 10,000 PSI, and 20,000 PSI classes

Types & Configurations of SS Needle Valves
Kalpataru manufactures every major type of stainless steel needle valve to suit diverse piping and instrumentation requirements. Each configuration is available in SS 304, SS 316, SS 316L, SS 321, SS 317L, and SS 347H grades.
Screwed End Needle Valve (Threaded Needle Valve)
The most widely used type. The body is threaded NPT or BSPT for direct connection to pipe fittings, manifolds, or instrument impulse lines. Available in straight and angle patterns. Pressure ratings: 800 PSI to 6,000 PSI. These screwed end needle valves are standard in instrumentation tubing circuits and sampling systems.
Socket Weld Needle Valve
Designed for socket weld connections to ASME B16.11 socket weld fittings. Preferred where vibration or high-cycle operation demands a permanent, leak-free joint. Pressure rating up to 6,000 PSI. Common in refineries and chemical plants.
Butt Weld Needle Valve
Features butt weld ends per ASME B16.25 for full-penetration weld joints. Offers the highest structural integrity and is preferred in cryogenic, steam, and high-purity applications. Suitable for pressures up to 10,000 PSI.
Tube End / Compression Needle Valve (Instrumentation Needle Valve)
Compatible with Swagelok, Parker, DK-LOK style compression tube fittings — pair these with our stainless steel instrumentation fittings for complete instrument loop assemblies. Also see our stainless steel check valve for flow protection in these circuits. Used extensively in instrumentation needle valve assemblies for 1/4″, 3/8″, 1/2″, and 3/4″ OD tubing. Delivers leak-free connections without threading.
High Pressure Needle Valve (10,000 PSI / 20,000 PSI)
Heavy-duty forged body with reinforced stem and packing. Used in hydraulic test rigs, gas injection wellheads, and high-pressure water-jet systems. Available in 10,000 PSI and 20,000 PSI ratings. These high pressure needle valves are also called ultra-high-pressure (UHP) needle valves.
Angle Needle Valve
Body is machined at 90 degrees, allowing installation in tight spaces where a straight-through valve won’t fit. The angle needle valve also produces less flow resistance than the straight pattern, making it useful in instrument air and hydraulic circuits.
Way Needle Valve
Features three ports allowing flow to be directed between two paths or vented. Commonly used as block-and-bleed valves in differential pressure transmitter circuits. A 3 way needle valve can isolate the instrument and vent it to atmosphere in a single operation.
Panel Mounted Needle Valve
Designed for direct panel mounting on instrument boards and control panels. Low-profile body with locknut for secure panel fixation. Ideal for panel mounted needle valve installations in process analyzers, test panels, and manifold assemblies.
Forged Needle Valve
Manufactured entirely from forged bar stock (ASTM A182 F304 / F316 / F316L) rather than cast bodies, delivering superior mechanical strength, finer grain structure, and higher pressure retention. All Kalpataru needle valves use forged bodies by default.
Knob Handle & Wheel Handle Needle Valve
The standard T-bar handle or knob handle suits bench and field service. For larger valves requiring higher torque, a knob handle needle valve with non-sparking handwheel is available for hazardous area service.

FAQs – Stainless Steel Needle Valve
A stainless steel needle valve is used for precise flow control (throttling) of liquids and gases in instrumentation, hydraulic, and process systems. Unlike ball or gate valves, the needle valve's tapered stem allows fine, incremental adjustment of flow rate rather than simple on/off operation. Common applications include instrument impulse line isolation, pressure gauge root valves, differential pressure transmitter manifolds, sampling circuits, and hydraulic test benches.
Kalpataru manufactures stainless steel needle valves in six standard pressure ratings: 800 PSI (55 bar), 3,000 PSI (207 bar), 6,000 PSI (414 bar), 10,000 PSI (689 bar), 15,000 PSI (1,034 bar), and 20,000 PSI (1,379 bar). The pressure rating depends on the body grade, valve size, temperature, and end connection type. High pressure needle valves (10,000 PSI and above) use heavier-wall forged bodies with reinforced gland packing.
Kalpataru SS needle valves are available with: (a) Screwed NPT (ASME B1.20.1) or BSPT (BS EN 10226) threaded ends in male or female patterns, (b) Socket weld ends per ASME B16.11, (c) Butt weld ends per ASME B16.25, (d) Tube end compression fittings compatible with Swagelok, Parker, or DK-LOK systems in 1/8" to 1" OD tubing, and (e) Flange end connections per ASME B16.5 on special order.
We supply stainless steel needle valves in sizes from 1/8" (6 mm) to 2" (50 mm) NPS, with orifice sizes from 2 mm to 9.5 mm. The most common instrumentation sizes are 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2". For tube fittings, we supply for tube ODs from 6 mm to 25 mm. Custom port sizes and body configurations are available on request with a lead time of 4-6 weeks.
