What Exactly Are Monel 400 & K500 Pipe Fittings?
Monel is, at its core, a nickel-copper alloy — roughly two-thirds nickel, a third copper — and that ratio is what makes it shrug off seawater and hydrofluoric acid in a way carbon steel simply can’t. Monel 400 (UNS N04400, also known by its Werkstoff number 2.4360) is the workhorse grade: tough, weldable, and reliably corrosion-resistant across a wide temperature band. Monel K500 (UNS N05500 / 2.4375) starts from the same base chemistry but gets a boost from small additions of aluminium and titanium, which are then age-hardened to nearly double the tensile strength. In practice, that makes K500 the grade engineers reach for when a component also has to carry mechanical load — pump shafts, valve stems, fasteners — not just resist corrosion.
