Monel 400 Seamless Tubes vs Welded Tubes
Seamless tubes are produced from solid bar stock by extrusion and cold drawing, leaving no weld seam. With no line of weakness along the wall, they are the preferred option for high-pressure, high-purity and safety-critical service such as instrumentation, hydraulics and heat-exchanger duty.
Welded tubes (ERW / EFW) are formed by rolling strip or plate and welding the longitudinal seam, then sizing and annealing. They are more economical and well suited to lower-pressure, structural and large-diameter applications. Both variants meet the same UNS N04400 chemistry and the relevant ASTM / ASME standards, so the choice usually comes down to operating pressure, criticality and budget.

Monel 400 Tubes Chemical Composition
Monel 400 contains a minimum of 63% nickel and 28–34% copper, with small additions of iron, manganese and carbon. This nickel-copper balance is what gives the alloy its characteristic resistance to seawater and reducing acids.

Monel 400 vs Monel K500 — Key Differences
Monel K500 (UNS N05500) is an age-hardened version of Monel 400, with roughly three times the yield strength thanks to additions of aluminium and titanium. Choose Monel 400 where corrosion resistance in seawater and chemical processing is the priority; choose Monel K500 where high strength and wear resistance matter, such as pump shafts and fasteners. For higher-temperature or more aggressively oxidising service, customers often compare Monel 400 against
Inconel 625 tubes and
Hastelloy C276 tubes.

Monel 400 Welded Tube – Applications
Thanks to its corrosion resistance and strength retention, Monel 400 welded tube is used across demanding process and energy industries, including:
- Sour gas handling systems
- Aerospace components
- Chimney and exhaust linings
- Jet engine exhaust units
- Chemical processing equipment
- High-performance automotive exhaust systems
- Nuclear waste processing units
Industries We Supply Monel 400 Tubes To
Our Monel 400 tubing serves a broad customer base across process, marine and energy sectors:
- Oil & Gas: downhole tubing, sour-service lines and offshore platform piping.
- Marine & Desalination: seawater heat exchangers, condensers and brine handling, where Monel 400 resists pitting at all temperatures.
- Chemical Processing: handling of hydrofluoric, sulphuric and hydrochloric acids in non-oxidising, deaerated conditions.
- Power Generation: feedwater heaters and condenser tubing.
- Pulp, Paper & Pharmaceuticals: corrosion-resistant process lines.
For more aggressive or higher-temperature duty we also supply
Incoloy 825 tubes, Copper Nickel 90/10 tubes and
Nickel 200 tubes.
Monel 400 Tube Corrosion Resistance
Monel 400 offers excellent resistance to seawater and marine atmospheres (no pitting at any temperature), hydrofluoric acid (up to 85% concentration at room temperature), dilute non-oxidising sulphuric acid, dilute non-aerated hydrochloric acid, and alkalis and caustic solutions. It is
not recommended for nitric acid, oxidising acid mixtures or moist chlorine gas, where the high copper content makes it vulnerable.
Monel 400 Tube Testing & Inspection
Every batch of Monel 400 tubing is supplied with full documentation and is tested before dispatch. Standard testing includes transverse tension testing, guided-bend (flattening/flaring) testing and hydrostatic testing, with non-destructive options such as eddy-current and ultrasonic examination available on request. Positive Material Identification (PMI) and dimensional inspection confirm conformity to UNS N04400 chemistry and the required ASTM / ASME standard, and material is supplied with EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates.
